Hearing Test

Test 1 Tone

Say the phrase or word below using different tones or attitudes. Then describe the tone and explain how the meaning changes depending on how it is spoken.

  • “I’m fine.”
  • “That’s interesting.”
  • “Sure.”
  •  “Okay.”

Test 2 Emphasis
Read the sentence below aloud several times, each time emphasizing a different word:

  • “I didn’t say she stole the money.”

After each reading, describe how the meaning changes based on which word is stressed. Notice how different listeners may hear different intentions, even though the words remain the same.

Consider the hearing test in the story in John 10:24-30

Insight

The Bible discussion begins with a careful reading of the whole passage, either from your own Bibles, or from the provided images below.

Then participants are to ask:

  1. What is going on in this passage of Scripture?
  2. What are the key words and phrases? Highlight them.
  3. Why do you think this passage is included in the Bible?
  4. What does it contribute to our “knowing Christ” and “living in Christ”?

In John 10:24–30, the question put to Jesus is direct and restless. “If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” It sounds reasonable, but it assumes that clarity comes mainly through words. Jesus answers by pointing to His actions. What he has done already carries meaning. The problem is not lack of information, but lack of recognition. Isaiah speaks to this tension when he describes people who hear, yet do not truly listen, and see without understanding (Isaiah 6:9).

Jesus then reframes the issue around relationship. “My sheep hear my voice.” This kind of hearing is active. It leads somewhere. It shapes decisions. It asks a quieter question in return. Am I listening in a way that allows my direction to change? Psalm 95 presses the same concern, urging listeners not to harden their hearts when God speaks.

What Jesus offers is steady rather than dramatic. “No one will snatch them out of my hand.” This promise of security does not rest on effort or emotion, but on the faithful care of a good Shepherd.
