A video introduction using illustrations, personal stories, metaphors, or active learning examples to begin the discussion.
After the video, prompts are supplied for thinking and sharing with others personal perception and experience. This opening activity prompts participants to think about and relate to the topic, and to share with others.
Defending What Matters
In sports, on the road, and at home, we take steps to guard against danger and harm. Let's brainstorm ways we protect in these three areas.
Divide into small groups (or discuss together) and list ways we protect in:
Sports Protection (Hockey, Football, Baseball)
Key: Helmets, mouthguards, padding, face shields, safety rules, referees enforcing fair play.
Automobile Safety
Key: Seat belts, airbags, ABS, lane departure warning, crumple zones, backup cameras, anti-theft alarms, hands-free technology.
Childproofing a Home
Key: Outlet covers, cabinet locks, baby gates, corner bumpers, window locks, stove knob covers, securing furniture, monitoring devices.
Just as we defend against physical harm, Mary faced criticism for pouring costly perfume on Jesus. How did Jesus defend her, and how does Jesus use offensive tactics as well?
The Bible discussion begins with a careful reading of the whole passage, either from your own Bibles, or from the provided images below.
Then participants are to ask:
Read Mark 14:1-11 and reflect on this unforgettable moment in Jesus’ final week. As He moves toward the cross, consider the significance of this scene.
Why do you think Jesus retreated to Bethany? Compare the parallel accounts in Matthew 26:6–13, Luke 7:36–50, and John 12:1–8. What theme stands out across these stories, and why is it so important?
Mary’s gift was costly, but the timing was even more profound. During Passover week, with tensions high, she wasn’t waiting to see what might happen—she was preparing Jesus for what must happen. Was she the only disciple truly listening? Compare with Matthew 16:21–23, Mark 9:30–32, and Luke 18:31–34. What were the disciples missing?
Jesus defends Mary from criticism but also proactively honors her. Jesus responds with defense but also points out the offensive measure by “preparing for my burial.” Instead of focusing on how others missed the point, let’s not miss it ourselves. How does Mark 14:9 show that her act of love still speaks to us today?
A parting video clip with a personal invitation to apply the message to “knowing Christ” and “living in Christ” in the coming week.
